How is a fly agaric different from psilocybin mushrooms

The fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) and psilocybin mushrooms (Psilocybe cubensis, Psilocybe semilanceata and others) are often confused with each other, believing that they have a similar effect. In fact, they are two completely different species with different chemistry, mechanism of action on the brain and even cultural significance.

Chemical composition
The fly agaric contains ibotenic acid and muscimol - substances that affect the inhibitory processes in the nervous system through GABA receptors. This means that the fly agaric does not cause classic hallucinations, on the contrary, it relaxes, calms and can promote deep sleep. Psilocybin mushrooms contain psilocybin and psilocin, active substances that affect the brain's serotonin receptors (5-HT2A). They are the ones that cause the well-known psychedelic effects - changes in the perception of color, space, time and intense visual experiences. That is, fly agaric acts as a natural sedative, while psilocybin mushrooms act as serotonin psychedelics.

Effects on consciousness
Fly agaric in small doses has a calming, relaxing effect, helps reduce anxiety and immerses in a state of inner peace. In larger doses, it can cause altered states of consciousness, similar to meditative or dreamlike. The effects of fly agaric are usually described as 'slow', deep and internally focused. Psilocybin mushrooms, on the contrary, stimulate mental activity, cause vivid visual images, expand consciousness and enhance emotional perception. Their effect is more dynamic, intense and 'external' - it is not an immersion in silence, but a journey through bright layers of perception.

Safety and dosage
Both types of mushrooms do not cause physical dependence, but require a different approach to dosage. Amanita has a narrow 'safety window': exceeding the dose can lead to nausea, loss of coordination and disorientation. With proper drying, toxicity is significantly reduced, as ibotenic acid is converted to muscimol. Psilocybin mushrooms in moderate quantities usually do not have a toxic effect, but their psychic intensity can be high - with the risk of panic states or emotional overload. Both types require careful attention to dosage, especially for beginners.

Legal status
Muscimol and ibotenic acid are not are prohibited by international conventions, so the fly agaric remains legal for collection and sale in most countries. It is often sold as a natural product for microdosing or educational purposes. Psilocybin is on the list of psychedelic substances and is officially banned in most countries, with the exception of a few countries where research or therapeutic use is allowed. So the fly agaric is a legal mushroom, while psilocybin mushrooms are mostly not.

Cultural use
The fly agaric has deep roots in European traditions. It was used as a medicine, amulet, and in spiritual ceremonies in the territory of modern Ukraine, Poland, Scandinavia, and the Baltics. Psilocybin mushrooms, on the other hand, originate from Central and South America, where they were used by the Mayans, Aztecs, and other peoples in rituals of communication with the gods and nature. Thus, the fly agaric is part of the northern mystical tradition, and psilocybin mushrooms are part of the southern, shamanic, and religious.

Summary
Amanita and psilocybin mushrooms are two completely different worlds. The first is a mushroom of peace, relaxation and restoration of balance; the second is a mushroom of vision, creativity and expansion of consciousness. They have different chemical compositions, act on different receptors in the brain and cause completely different states. Both are worthy of respect as natural tools for exploring consciousness, but require a smart, careful and conscious approach.
