
Differences between red and panther fly agaric
Among the dozens of species of the Amanita genus, two are the most famous - red fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) and panther fly agaric (Amanita pantherina). They have a common origin and similar active substances, but differ significantly in appearance, concentration of compounds and effect on the human body.
Appearance
Red fly agaric is easy to recognize - its cap is bright red or red-orange, with distinct white spots, which are the remains of the cover. The leg is white, sometimes with a small ring. This mushroom looks 'classical' and is often depicted in fairy tales and illustrations.
The panther fly agaric has a more restrained appearance: the cap is olive-brown or grayish-brown, also with white spots, but smaller and denser. Its leg is slimmer, and under the cap there is a distinct skirt. The panther species is often confused with edible mushrooms, which can be dangerous.

Both species contain similar active substances - ibotenic acid, muscimol and small amounts of muskazone and muscarine. However, the concentration of these compounds is different.
In the red fly agaric, the content of muscimol is moderate, and ibotenic acid is relatively lower. This makes it milder in action after drying.
In the panther fly agaric, the concentration of active substances is much higher, so it is much stronger in effect, but also more risky for use.
Researchers believe that the panther fly agaric can be 2–3 times more potent than the red one. That is why even a small amount of this mushroom can cause intense effects or poisoning if the dosage is incorrect.
Effects on the body
The red fly agaric acts mildly. After drying and converting ibotenic acid into muscimol, it can induce a state of relaxation, clarity, improved sleep, and reduced anxiety. That is why it is often used in microdosing practices.
